Grant Writing:
Many health organizations
rely on grants to provide financial stability, ensuring the employment of their
staff and continuity of their health programs. I had previously participated in
programs that were grant funded; however, it was not until I took the
Professional Grant Writing course that I was engaged in the writing process. I
gained skills in persuasive writing and speaking. I learned to frame an argument (pitch) that highlights a program’s benefits, while minimizing portions
that grantors may deem unnecessary.
I have not met any community health leaders that have not expressed the need for more monetary resources, which suggests that grant writing skills are valued within the field of public health. I learned that grantors often times have specific areas of focus and rarely fund grants seeking core staff support, which can make it difficult for health organizations to find grants that would service their needs.

New Arrivals Institute: Grant Proposal
A fellow colleague and I partnered with
the New Arrivals Institute of Greensboro, NC to develop a grant proposal that
will be used to increase case management services for refugees beyond the initial
reception and placement phase in Guilford County. The New Arrivals Institute (NAI) is known for promoting
immigrant and refugee self-sufficiency and integration into life in the U.S. by
providing ESOL teaching, vocational education training, community orientation
classes, and citizenship classes. This agency seeks to expand its
services by addressing the following three objectives:
The grant proposal (shown below) provides an organizational overview, a case study, an explanation of the societal need, a proposed solution, and a detailed budget explaining how New Arrivals Institute plan to allocate the grant funding. Submission of this proposal to a potential grantor will occur within the coming months.
- Promote adoption of healthy behaviors through health promotion and disease prevention strategies
- Increase awareness of refugee health needs to health providers
- Increase refugee access to health services
